The monthly #JobsDay report showed unemployment fell to 6.9% and 630K jobs gained. As per usual, the Black-white gap rose towards the 2:1 ratio. But this thread is going to be different because I want to talk about policy and white men.
Forgive me, I may ramble onâŚ

But first â in @kairyssdal voice â letâs do the numbers. African Americans are still seeing double digit unemployment rates while whites are down to 6%.
While EPOP and LFPR are rising, it is showing sluggish growth which is sadly reminiscent of the austerity path we took after the Great Recession.
For women, the unemployment rates for Black women and Latinas have been tracking together and white women have seen a low rate of 5.6% (even below that of white men).
Donât want to get into politics but that gap b/w white women & women of color is telling, but Iâll let smarter people than me discuss that ( @CAPWomen).
Also, let me drop this link to @karnythiaâs great book Hood Feminism (buy from an indie bookstore). https://bookshop.org/books/hood-feminism-notes-from-the-women-that-a-movement-forgot/9780525560548

But what I want to rant about is how our policy apparatus is designed to respond solely to white menâs economic indicators. I wrote about this last week in @MarketWatch. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/white-men-are-doing-mostly-fine-without-more-economic-relief-from-washington-but-just-about-everyone-else-is-suffering-11604069374
Here are numbers for men by race.
Note the CARES Act was passed when white men had double digit unemployment rate and once it dropped below, we havenât seen anything since.
Also, note how well WM unemployment tracks with the monthly numbers.

Look at that figure and then look at this current tweet: https://twitter.com/JStein_WaPo/status/1324733653176487939?s=20
Why would you push a âskinnyâ package when we have daily 100K covid case rates, continuing state & local job losses, business struggles, etc?
If you look at the numbers solely for white men, they yeah maybe a skinny bill is all that is needed.

So to conclude, our situation in this pandemic is worse now than it was in April.
The only thing that is really better is the unemployment rate for white men. And it basically explains the election. (/end)
