I’ll block anyone (why is it always men?) who says that Democrats failed or need to pour more effort into Texas. We did. Y’all did. And it shows! The confidence, grit, and energy needed to BE a progressive Democrat, in the face of entrenched racist conservatism, is here to stay.
It's a big deal to cover your yard in Democratic candidate signs, even when you know your neighbors on either side are gun totting Trumpers who only watch Fox news. That's the entrance to my neighborhood - a gauntlet of Trump flags and signs and one brave Biden sign. Bless them.
There may be more Biden signs in my immediate neighborhood, but it's popular with university professors and other folks from academia. We've always been here. We've always voted this way. That one sign in the gauntlet might not have.
My local dems are ALREADY ready to meet to learn from this experience and move forward. These women (& everybody who's sent me meeting email & organizing email & brought me postcards to write has been a middle-aged woman) are still busting their collective asses to get this done.
That's not to say men haven't done the work, oh no! There's a lot of damn hard working guys in this Texas party, who deserve a break and cold drink. I'm just aiming at the clueless critics for whom women's work is always invisible. I see you. You're not helping.
There's so much to contend with in Texas. Gerrymandered districts, ridiculous barriers to registration, staying registered, voting safely and efficiently or at all. Far-right politicians with access to piles of money. A sense of helplessness at the powers that be.
But as someone who has gnashed her teeth against western media portrayals of the entirety of other cultures crushed under the heel of the powerful, I'll be damned if you're going to make that shit stick to a diverse American state. Back that crap up.
I'm also done with the "you can't change them" narrative. It's righteous helplessness. Cut that shit out. If every non-POC person had the guts to persistently talk another person out of the racist propaganda they are constantly exposed to, we'd move into the 21st century.
