We are painfully aware of reports in recent years about systemic abuse in faith communities. Catholics, Jews, Protestants, Muslims, and Mormons all have a stated purpose to glorify God and serve him faithfully.

Yet so many religious systems have worked to cover up abuse, deny abuse, and protect the offenders. Many have done so “to protect God’s work,” which actually translates into preserving an institution rather than the humans meant to flourish in it.

We have preferred our organizational trappings to the holiness of God. We have guarded our material treasures rather than the treasure of human beings. Talk about self-injury and disastrous consequences. Destroy the children and there will be no future.
