Why Marxist Leninist spaces are so rife with abuse towards black, trans and disabled people, a thread:
MLism as an ideology is primarily for “the workers”. It only considers economic social relations, all other social relations are ignored and subsequently white cishet ableds get centred implicitly
As the logic and ideology of these people is implicitly centring the oppressors, in order to convince oppressed people of it, a degree of gaslighting and group pressure is necessary. People need to be diverted away from their struggles towards the struggles of white cis ableds
Subsequently, a toxic culture of being dismissed and ostracised as a “radlib” or some other thing comes about if you ever actually centre your own oppression and oppressed people. Group pressure and social ostracisation prevent you from falling out of line.
In such a toxic culture, an implicit hierarchy forms. One between those who have “good takes” and “knowledgeable” (the best at dismissing the oppresseds concerns and converting them via abusive means) and those who are not.
The ones who are the best at it are subsequently rewarded with social capital by the group. They are given some degree of authority and power over others. A social expectation develops for people to listen to them and to respect them in an authoritative sense.
This is then compounded by group pressure. Group pressure ensures oppressed people in these spaces feel this. It ensures they’re encouraged to trust these people on a personal level as that makes it easier to convince them into the ideology.
Given that their entire existence in these spaces revolves around gaslighting and abuse of social power, the leap from doing that to abusing people in more extreme ways is quite small. Especially if the targets are children or oppressed people.
Fundamentally speaking, all they really have to do is continue with the predatory behaviour, but now with people who already trust them on a personal level despite having no real reason to do so aside from social fear and group pressure.
If someone is already an abuser, it’s also extremely easy for them to blend in with such a toxic environment. Gaslight oppressed people enough and you get social capital for it, and then can use that to further the abuse you engage in.
To change the social relations and psychology of these spaces we also need to change the ideology from one that centres oppressors on an innate level to one that always centres the oppressed.
Social relations also need to change to ensure there is no toxic power dynamics between people of different levels of knowledge. It’s okay to have some people who need to learn, but there needs to be no group pressure for the teachers to be trusted, they need to be under scrutiny
