It is exhausting, but also fitting that Biden's victory is taking this long. It's the way it works on the rare occasions when your decent, tentative manager of many years gets a big promotion over the self-proclaimed strong leader of the day.
That simple analogy is also the reason why Biden will end up with more or less the same margins Trump had in 2016 (+ the popular vote). And many will still frame his victory as a career loyalty prize, rather than a stunning achievement.
When it comes, let us celebrate the triumph of the stumbling, caring manager over the hyper-confident, fanatical leader. Of restrained authenticity over the impulsive kind. It will be good for this, and many other offices.
Let this day be a reminder of a basic management principle:
Leaders set the world on fire, managers keep it from burning down.
Leaders set the world on fire, managers keep it from burning down.
I know, I know, that management vs leadership is old and boring, comparisons to offices are trite. I know. It's management comfort food. At least it's not toxic leaderism.
