1/ I've been reading tweets from people on the right who are incredulous that there are people "who don't believe election fraud is possible." It's not that I don't think it's possible. #ElectionNight
/2 But I'm very skeptical since I've seen literally dozens of election fraud conspiracy theories debunked in the last 72 hours. I don't think those all came from people who knew better and are trying to deceive people either.
/3 A lot of them are based on videos or facts reported by the media that look very suspicious at first glance to people who aren't experts on how elections work. Even I initially believed a few of them!
/4 If you already believe that wide-scale election fraud is a thing, then you will naturally be less skeptical when someone tweets a claim declaring proof of election fraud, which you already "know" is happening. Again, a lot of these cases look bad on their face.
/5 Given how many of these cases have been debunked now, I think it would be good for ALL of us to increase our epistemological humility. In other words, be open-minded and aware that it's easy to fall for a false claim of election fraud.
/6 Research a given claim before spreading it. If real proof of election fraud comes out, I want to know about it. I really do. Every legitimate vote should be counted.
/7 But you also ought to have the intellectual honesty to know that literally dozens of these theories have been debunked and therefore turn up your own skepticism on any individual case. And maybe stop mocking the rest of us who are skeptical of any supposed case.
/8 We're all going to have to come together at the end of this crazy thing. Democrats are not my enemies, nor are Trump's hardcore supporters.
/9 If we don't do the hard thing and learn to have gracious and productive conversations with people on the other side of the political aisle, then I fear for what will come next.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
