Designed in 1927 and completed in 1936, the Brotherton Library has stood the test of time and remains a favourite spot on campus.

It's home to many of the University's three million books, and some exemplary art deco light fittings.

👇
The architects, Lanchester & Lodge, wanted to hide the Brotherton Library, keeping it 'completely obscured from the outside world.'

However, with the advent of WWII in 1939, construction of the Parkinson Building was paused, leaving the library exposed.
Construction of the Parkinson Building resumed after the war and was completed in 1951.

Meaning the Brotherton Library has been a real hidden gem since then.
