This #TrusteeWeek we want to highlight the unbearable whiteness of charity boards. Without truly diverse boards our sector has no hope of dismantling institutional racism. We have no faith in boards doing what is needed, but if we did this is what we would recommend:
1. Transform the makeup of your boards to ensure they are truly diverse and reflect the communities you serve. Don't focus only on adding diverse trustees, reflect on the makeup of your board. Where does the power lie? Who is represented? What is the board culture?
2. Ensure that equity and diversity is everyone's business:
- Set objectives and targets for every role in org
- Hold leaders to account on these objectives
- Create spaces for deep reflection on racial equity within the organisation
3. Give up your seat at the table - white trustees in particular should strongly consider giving up their roles and power within boards, in order to create the space needed to diversify boards and transform culture. Don't just expand the table, give up your space on it.
This #TrusteeWeek we ask all board members to reflect on the power that you have and how your position reinforces racist structures. It is your responsibility to dismantle institutional racism. Boards must step up.
