Ludovico di Varthema, a medieval italian traveler who spent some time in Vijayanagara around the year 1502 CE describes the then emperor Narasimha Raya IV :

"He wears a cap of gold brocade, and when he goes to war [he has]
a quilted dress of cotton, with an overgarment...(1)
... full of golden
piasters and hung with jewels.

The ornaments of his horse are
worth more than an Italian city.

He rides out with three or four
kings, many lords and five or six thousand horse".. (2)
Varthema's description of Hampi :

"The city of Bisnagar
(Vijayanagar) belongs to the king of Narasinga and is very large
and strongly walled. It stands on the side of a mountain with
three circles of walls, the outermost circle, 7 miles round...(3)
... The site is beautiful and the air the best ever seen, and round the city are hunting places and fowling places. It seems a second paradise.
The land is rich and there is much trade and every delicacy.
The king is the richest I have ever heard of.." (4)
"The ornaments of his horse are worth more than an Italian city"

~ Italian traveler Ludovico di Varthema on Vijayanagara emperor Narasimha Raya.
