On this day 106 years ago the 7th (Household) Cavalry Brigade were called in to support 4th Guards Brigade near Zillebeke. They dismounted and took back the contested ground with a series of spirited bayonet charges.

They will not be forgotten.

We will remember them.
The Household Cavalry had 96 killed, wounded or missing, including Lt Col Wilson commanding RHG and Maj Dawnay, commanding 2LG.

Both Sir Douglas Haig and Sir John French sent messages in gratitude for the gallant actions undertaken.
This was also the engagement where Churchill's future spymaster Lt Stewart 'M' Menzies of the 2nd Life Guards received a DSO for taking command of a squadron, when all the other officers had been killed or wounded.
