The conversation around the “Latino/a/e/x”/ “Hispanic” vote is exhausting because to start: Latinidad is not a race; an accent is not a race; nationalities & birthplaces are not indicative of race; & migration status is not a race.
Breaking down voters by the category of “Latino/a/e/x”/ “Hispanic” is simply combining the votes of non-U.S. Asian, Indigenous, Black, and White people of MX, C. America, (most of) S. America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean (Haiti is often excluded 😫).
Breaking down voters by country is also not it: a nation is not a race. Race exists in Latin America & the Caribbean. White people exist in Latin America & the Caribbean. Black people (primarily because of the transAtlantic slave trade) exist in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Asian people (a large % b/c of indentured servitude and another % b/c of a recent imperial presence) exist in Latin America and the Caribbean. Indigenous people have resisted over 500 years of colonialism in Latin America and the Caribbean.
I am not going to analyze data on a Twitter thread b/c y’all ain’t paying me, but I will say this: Latinidad is a concept; a concept that in 2020 is most useful to those who are white, heterosexual, cisgender and able-bodied from Latin America and parts of the Caribbean.
In alleged Latino/a/e/x communities, not everyone who IS from Latin America & the Caribbean (or their diasporas) are imagined as “Latinx.” Anti-Blackness existe in Latin America & the Caribbean, which means that Black Latinos/as/es/xs are often not imagined as Latino/a/e/x/.
Indigenous peoples of Latin American & Caribbean descent, when clumped into “Latino/a/e/x” not only have to fight against settler-logic in the country they migrated from, but also settler United Statian logic that re-brands them as “Latino/a/e/x.”
I can say more but it’s late now and I been making visual art, writing articles, publishing poetry books, and talking about this for a few years now. Just go look for it.
Tweeting is why my carpal tunnel is so bad.
Y’all remember when I cancelled Latinidad? Who said subscriptions were renewed? 🧐🧐🧐
