THREAD: I lived in and covered news in Pennsylvania for 6 years. Florida, now for 2 years. I'm so grateful to have spent so much time in swing states and have some semblance of understanding how they operate. (1/7)
I've had several family members in New Jersey and New York reach out in these last few days with comments and questions about each state. It is so hard to comprehend the reality and functioning of states you've never lived in before. That's where my family has struggled. (2/7)
"How blue is this region? How red is that one? What are the demographics there? How does their ballot counting work? How soon can we expect results from there? When did they start counting mail ins?" These are just some of the questions I've been asked this week. (3/7)
Part of the problem is that each state is so entirely different in their governmental operations, it's hard to know what's even going on. (4/7)
When comparing the two states, I'll say this. I never once covered ballot counting or canvassing boards in PA. I covered them many times in 2018 here in FL. The stark difference to me is the wide open records and easy access to information in FL. (5/7)
In PA, it was challenging to even get a police report, let alone witness ballot counting and the canvassing board at the elections offices. In FL, many of those meetings are livestreamed right on Facebook. Transparency is paramount. (6/7)
I am not knocking anyone or any state or any functionality here. I'm just saying it's all feeling like a hot mess right now and I'm happy to be of service in breaking things down for folks. I don't know everything but I know some. And I'm happy to share. (7/7)
