If we can take pay walls down for natural disasters, it seems fitting to also do so for the unnatural disaster that is happening now in order to help people understand what is happening during an unusual, extremely volatile, confusing and important period following an election.
It's hard to argue that your work is essential if you make it the least accessible when it is most needed. National journalism operates like an emergency room with high intensity interventions but without the same dynamic of being offered regardless of ability to pay upfront.
Journalists, as people deeply plugged into information loops, are far more likely to understand what is happening right now. Others, who only catch the news in bits and pieces are confused and are trying to understand.
We have to remember that people who are having to go and look for information are finding free and easily accessed lies and misinformation.
