Kizumonogatari is a tragedy at heart. Kizu means wound, it is a story of wounds, where both sides lose and get hurt...
But just like a vampire, wounds can regenerate. Araragi chooses the option where at the moment both sides get hurt but also the option where both sides have hope for betterment.
If he would've let Kiss-shot die right there, hope wouldn't have been an option and I as the viewers know this. I have already seen how their relationship has evolved and has healed in later seasons and that is what monogatari is all about.
Don't run away from the things that trouble you, from your wounds, face them head on and overcome them. It is such a prevelent theme throughout the entire series shown by so many characters (especially senjougahara, hanekawa and now shinobu too).
Wounds may sting for a bit but if you work toward healing them, it is possible.
Conclusion : monogatari gud
