Hey #CLST6, for my #RR17 I will be focusing on the extreme detail of the Trajan Column and looking at preparation for the first Dacian war.

This column is an amazing monument to the Roman's victory, standing 128 feet high with a continuous spiral frieze [1] https://twitter.com/FlintCLST6/status/1323682034322231296
Here we can see the beginnings of the preparation along the Danube river. The detail of actions is particularly impressive; we can see sentries along haybales preparing to light fires alongside other soldiers filling boats on the river with supplies for the battle [2].
In the lecture, we see another example of the extreme detail of the frieze with a Roman soldier dumping out dirt and rocks to help with construction [3]. These mundane tasks are not always the most captivating when compared to battle scenes, but they are extremely informative!
These first few scenes provide an important basis for the rest of the narrative (despite it not being perfectly chronological). When viewing this piece Romans would have seen all of the intense efforts that went into the victory of this war, both before, during, and after.
