Media literacy angle: network news starts at .... you guessed it.and it’s an audience cable news typically doesn’t reach. (They should not put him on the air unfiltered; this is all a PR gambit to make wild claims inserted into the public mind w/o fact checks) https://twitter.com/chadpergram/status/1324484849722445824
Nightly news is heavily scripted. I am pretty sure the hope is they will put Trump on and have no plan to fact check in real time, or how to scrap segments. I’m watching this circus through that lens.
A couple other thoughts about this nonsense you are about to watch:
First, media historians and critics noted one of the things that made Joe McCarthy’s assault on democracy possible in the 1950s is he exploited press routines. He routinely dropped documents and lists of alleged communists right before evening press and news deadlines.
He knew that journalists would publish verbatim and check the day after, as it does. But the lie took root. McCarthy understood press routines and exploited it to his advantage. And he did a lot of damage to our institutions and to people.
Second, and related: Back in those days, the press adjusted. They figured out the game and altered their tactics. And they had someone like Murrow to call him out. https://bit.ly/351UllV
But this is 2020.
News has adjusted about putting Turmp on live and unfiltered (somewhat). But they are no longer the sole gatekeepers. This is made for TV, and for Facebook, and for Twitter, and for ….
You can’t clamp down an ecosystem.

And, I think more significantly: we don’t have a Murrow, who was universally respected in a time TV news was new and there was a lot less choice.
The ‘50s had a voice to call bullshit on a charlatan exploiting fear for personal gain.
Now we have ____.
(Seriously, I don’t know)

So my advice is same as it ever was:
1. If you have to put him on live, you have to pre-report all the wild nonsense Trump has been spewing *without evidence* …
2. But, better. Clip him short, and cut away if he starts using you as a megaphone for lies. You have to.

The counts are the counts, at this point. But there is a background war for how the public sees the count and the court fights that might come.
Ref. Bush/Gore recount in 2000. Bush publicly met with cameras with the Speaker and Senate Majority leader to plan for a transition.

PR alone can’t win it, but it can shape it.
So we are at an interesting time. Trump has stress tested how the news handles this thing tonight for the past four years. Will they be ready?
¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

Of course, all this insta-analysis about network TV news goes to hell if he’s late to this like he’s been late to every other presser the past few years.
Also, watch if he takes questions. Doubt he will.
Also very possible he hijacks the end of the news, knowing they won’t stay and fact check or give it lip service.
