Thinking a lot about the rhetoric of my network these last few days. I'm disappointed by the vitriol and name-calling on both sides.

Voting for a candidate is not a reveal of a person's heart, morals or even their track record of behavior.

Terrified, but a political 🧵 ...
For folks who LOVE politics - it's an easy shorthand to be able to pull out:

A vote for Trump = A vote for racism
A vote for Biden = A vote for dead babies

This isn't critical thinking. This is convenience politics designed to divide us.
In defending our own vote, we often pull out an equally simplistic shorthand:

My vote for Trump = A vote for Freedom
My vote for Biden = A vote for Equality

Candidates are not democracy.

The nation, its laws, the 3 branches, debate, the vote - that's Freedom. That's Equality.
There is also no requirement in democracy that we reveal our votes to anyone.

That is by design. Voter suppression and intimidation can look like shouting at someone at the polls. Or it can look like calling them a racist in a public forum, like social media.

Yes, I said it.
My hope is to remind you to treat each other with a bit of decency, kindness and openness.

And before you @ me with: BUT, BUT, BUT:

I remind you that in the long journey towards a better union, there are MANY steps.

And this one election is just one of those steps.
