There are 12 million undocumented people in the US. So many people don't fully understand that the immigrant employees in restaurants, grocery stores, delivery, etc are largely undocumented or non-citizens. They can't vote--don't blame them. https://twitter.com/daguilarcanabal/status/1324429050471837696
Think back to March or April. Were you able to work from home? Were you able to be unemployed because of the unemployment benefits? Did you order food online? Were your delivery people immigrants? They were undocumented or non-citizens. So many of them were Latinx/Hispanic.
They didn't stay home despite the deadly virus because they couldn't stay home, because if they did, they would starve. There was no government aid for these undocumented essential workers. The ones with green cards were afraid of getting deported if they received benefits.
These undocumented "essential" workers went out & got exposed in a period where we didn't have any treatments. And they died. They died in proportions larger than other populations. They had severe panic attacks, crippling anxiety, because they knew they were being left for dead.
How do I know this? My dad has been an "essential" undocumented worker this whole pandemic. One of his co-workers died of Covid. My mom was an "essential" undocumented worker until September, when she quit her job, because management kept being reckless with her health.
