Since people wrongly mention US as the oldest Democracy in the world, I am just writing a very short thread, making it clear that India is the Country which had Republican States before anyone else in the world.

Our first written references are from the time of Buddha.
Buddha as we all know was born in 624 BC. And his own Kingdom followed a Republican Form of Govt.

Which means, Republics in India actually existed before the time of Buddha too.

So one Indian State having Republican Govt was Kapilavastu, run by Sakyan people.
2nd Republic was Rāmagrāma which was run by Kolis.

Kolis were essentially a group of people closely related to Sakyans. Their state was divided from Kapilavastu by Rohini River, and there were often quarrels over its waters for irrigation. 😃
3rd Republic was Vesāli, which was run by Licchavi people.

Vesāli falls in Bihar, on banks of Ganga, across ancient Pātliputra, which was then Pātligrāma on the outskirts of Rājagriha, the capital of Magadha Kingdom.

Buddha had taught them 7 mantras to keep Vesali protected.
4th was Kusināra, run by Mallā people.

It is this state where Buddha attained Mahāparinibbāna and his Bodily relics were divided amongst 8 Kingdoms.
5th was Pāva, also run by Mallā people. Also known as, I guess Pāvapuri, later on.
6th was Pipphalivana, which was run by Moriya people.

Yes, the same Moriyas, who later rose as Mauryas under Chandragupta Maurya. But in times of Buddha they were very small and scattered in between till Chandragupta’s rise. But in same region overall.
8th was Suputa run by Brahmana people called Kālāma.

They were spiritually a very advanced group of people. Another village which fell in Koshala Pradesh was controlled by them, Keshamukt.

Alara Kalama, Buddha’s first teacher was from this community.
Missed a number, so 7th was Sunsamargiri, run by Bhagga people...have not read much about them, but they may have been Bharga... so Bhargava Brahmans...
9th was Mithila which was run by Videha.

The word Videha is used for those who are “very intelligent”.
10th was Kollanga which was run by Ghvatarika people. Have read nearly nothing about them.

But these are the ten Republics whose mentions we find in India of more than 2600yrs ago.

India nurtured oldest Republics, hence democracies in the world. Not US.
