Ancient Egyptians loved jewelry, besides being beautiful items, jewelry had religious and magical purposes, and also due to the hot and dry climate, most of Egyptians wore clothing that was simple and light,so wearing jewelry was a way to display their wealth and status.
Ancient Egyptians believed deeply in jewelry‘s spiritual meaning. It was worn to keep away evil spirits, protect their wealth, as well as bring good luck. Colors, designs and materials were associated with supernatural powers and the gods and goddesses.
Protective amulets were worn as independent pieces, or fused into jewelry. The amulets were talismans or charms believed to give power, or to protect the wearer alive or dead. Amulets were made mainly for the afterlife, as memorial jewelry was habitual for ancient Egypt.
Ancient Egyptians began making their jewelry during the Badari and Naqada periods using natural materials; such as plant fibers, shells, beads, solid stones or bones arranged in threads of flax or cow hair. Egyptians gave brilliance to stones painting them with glass substances.
During the First Dynasty, ancient Egyptians were making silver and gold jewelry with solid semiprecious stones. The art of goldsmithing reached its peak in the Middle Kingdom, here Egyptians mastered the skills and technical methods in making jewelry pieces with precious metals.
TeDuring the New Kingdom, goldsmithing continued to flourish and regular trips to the Eastern Desert and Nubia to extract metals were made. These metals were processed and inlaid with semiprecious and precious stones found in Egypt and other ones that were imported.
Ancient Egyptians used gold and silver in their jewelry, but gold use was predominant due to its accessibility. Polychrome glass was used for colorful jewelry and beads, as well as for pottery, in vibrant shades of green, red, yellow, and blue.
Ancient Egyptians used gemstones and colors purposefully, the favorite was Lapis lazuli one of the most prized of all gemstones, it represented rebirth and creation. Turquoise represented joy and pleasure. Emeralds, were a symbol of immortality and fertility.
Malachite, promoted healing. Garnet, symbolized fire, victory and life. Carnelian, was believed to purify the blood, symbolized stability and protection. Obsidian, symbolized death. Amethyst, represented royalty. Jewelry represented the ancient Egyptians beliefs and life stile.
