THE PROPHET’S HUMANITY: WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW

#Thread

Prophet Muhammad (saw) is humane, compassionate, tender, gentle and caring not only to his companions and believers, he included those who turned him out of his home and won their hearts.
Imam Ahmad has reported from Abul Fagwa’a Alkhuza’iy that Prophet Muhammad had once sent him with money to Abu Sufyan bn Harb to distribute to the poor people among the polytheists of Mecca. That was when he was in Medina and they were fighting him!
This is because according to Prophet Muhammad human beings are all brothers and sisters who descended from a common ancestor. Ibn Athir in “Jami’ul Usul” had reported that at the end of every prayer Prophet Muhammad says “I testify that all human beings are brethren”.
From this we can understand that according to the teachings of Islam, humanity doesn’t segregate Muslims from non-Muslims. As Imam Ali (as) said, all human beings are brethren, either in faith or in humanity. We are expected to show compassion to anyone regardless of his beliefs.
Contrary to what we see terrorists doing, disobeying and beheading their parents because they consider them unbelievers, Prophetic guidance shows that even if your parents are unbelievers you’re expected to be compassionate and obedient to them.
Asma’u bnt Abibakr had once asked Prophet Muhammad about her mother who was unbeliever and he replied to her that she should show a filial piety to her. The same answer was given to Abdullahi bn Marwan by Mujahid bn Jabr.
Although Prophet Muhammad made every effort to shed no blood of his enemies even when the chance of vengeance against them was available (read the history of the conquest of Mecca), when war became inevitable, he made killing of innocents, women, and children totally forbidden.
Many years before climate activists would emerge, Prophet Muhammad said no Muslim should remove a tree. He enjoined his followers to plant trees and said God will reward any person who plants a tree. The Prophet knew very well that planting a tree is tantamount to saving lives.
At “Fathu Makka”, Prophet gathered all his arch enemies and asked them what was their expectations now that they became helpless. Terrified by what might happen to them they begged for his mercy. He asked all of them to go and enjoy their lives! The same people that drove him out
What can we deduct from this? We should all learn to be compassionate to all human beings regardless of their beliefs or religious views. All the examples I gave above are related to nonbelievers. There are many of them that we can find in his biography.
At a time when many Muslims curse the corpses of unbelievers by saying “Allah kara nauyin kasa”, they forget that the Prophet was reported to have stood up and respected the corpse of a jew! His companions told him that the dead was a jew and he said “Is he not a human being?”
At the “Battle of Badr” when many Meccan polytheists were killed, the Prophet Muhammad respected their bodies and buried them! He didn’t allow the bodies to vultures and other beasts. He buried them because that is how a human being wants to see himself - buried after his death.
Prophet Muhammad was reported to have said that your neighbour, even if he is not a Muslim, has some rights on you. You should not cheat or oppress him. You should respect and protect him. He is your neighbour even if he is not a Muslim.
This is what Allah means by sending Prophet Muhammad as a mercy to all beings. Allah didn’t say Prophet is a mercy to Muslims alone. He said he is a mercy to all beings “Rahmatan Lil Alameen”. Prophet is a mercy to human beings, animals, plants, and all other creatures.
By showing the teachings of Islam in our interactions, of compassion and tenderness, we can overcome the crisis of terrorism within and Islamophobia without. While we know terrorism is not part of Islam, we can only prove that to others by showing it in our daily interactions.
It’s a perfect time for us Muslims to follow the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad, to emulate many things from his relationship with not only unbelievers but his open enemies who drove him out of his home but didn’t only forgive them, but sent money to help them! #Maulid1442
I’m stopping here. I don’t want it long.
