On the back of this retweet by @louiseckenny, I want to talk more about what Scousers and Liverpudlians can do to effectively combat COVID-19 misinformation in their local communities. #MassTesting #liverpool #LetsGetTested #breakthechain https://twitter.com/louiseckenny/status/1324326451957649411
Much of the disinformation being spread and shared online is on local Facebook and WhatsApp groups.

*Don't* ignore it or pretend you didn't see it. Challenge it politely and firmly. Notify community moderators of the offending post.
How you phrase your response is as important as your response. Conspiracy theories are generally very simple to understand & explain concepts. Avoid repeating the conspiracy theory, & instead learn to utilise the "truth sandwich" response to conspiracy theories.
Prebunking. Get ahead of issues that you *know* will be used to spread conspiracy theories ahead of time. "No the army is forcing people to get tested"

(this is mainly a tool for journalists, but can be used by everyone).
Dont share the conspiracy theory. Don't retweet, like or distribute it in any way. If you share disinfo/misinfo (even to debunk it) Social Media algorithms assume you want more people to share it, and you become a disinformation amplifer. If you must share it, share a screengrab.
Localise the context. If a piece of disinformation about your area is being spread (eg claims the army are forcing people to get tested in an area), confirm your local knowledge that it's not true. Share any relevant information with journalists covering the conspiracy theory.
"Humour over rumour". The Taiwanese govt effectively utilised memes & jokes to disarm conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories are inherently ridiculous & lend themselves easily to ridicule. And people like the funny. It gets shared, & seen widely.
But above all, *STOP SHARING CONSPIRACY THEORIES*. Even to mock them. You're helping to propagate them. It doesn't matter if *you* know it's bullshit, an ironic share works exactly like a regular share in an algorithms mind. It *thinks* you want more people to see the post.
