Thanks for 99 followers! Gonna make a thread on Hunter x Hunter 99' and why it's worth watching:
While it's an adaptation of the same manga, HxH 1999 is surprisingly different from 2011. There's obvious reasons for this: darker color palette, cel animation, different ost, and also a lot of fillers/anime original content.
I know most people hate fillers, but the fillers in 1999 are integrated so well that I didn't even realize that they were fillers until I watched 2011. Not only do they fit in well, but they also add a lot to the world and characters. They feel like an actual part of the story.
The first episode is my fav first ep of all time and yet it's almost entirely filler. It focuses on immersing the viewer into this mystical world, and it does this very well with its beautiful, colorful backgrounds. The ost makes it feel very melancholic
Couldn't fit the backgrounds into the other tweet so I'll just put them here
It also includes the scenes with Kite that 2011 cut out for whatever reason and it focuses a lot on Gon and Mito's relationship, which is beautiful in this version
2011 focuses more on selling you on this grand adventure with its first episode. I'm not saying 1999 is better. I'm just pointing out how different it is from 2011, and that's exactly what makes it worth watching
And this isn't the only good filler in 1999. There's a LOT of great fillers but I don't wanna go on forever so I'll just put some pictures
A lot of people say that 1999 has bad visuals and I don't think they've actually seen it. The screenshots above should tell you that they're wrong, but here I'll give you more. I have enough screenshots to do more of these too
The animation isn't as consistent as the animation in 2011 but it's still generally good. And it's best cuts are arguably better animated than 2011's best cuts
One of the strongest aspects of the 1999 anime is the direction. Kazuhiro Furuhashi is a god (watch Trust & Betrayal btw). He often takes creative liberties to improve scenes and it's almost always a great addition
The same scene in 2011 is good, but I think it happens too fast. The chain rattling as it slowly rises up in 1999 is such a great addition and the ost makes it feel a lot more tragic. Link for comparison:
Here's more scenes that are godly in 1999:
(this one looks a bit weird because the uploader stretched it out to 16:9 aspect ratio)
Again, I'm not trying to say that 1999 is better than 2011. I'm saying that they're both great adaptations with their own strengths, and that's why they're both worth watching.
Also, if you're a HxH fan you're probably starving for content anyways so yeah you might as well watch it.
So yeah I'd really recommend watching the 1999 anime, even if you've already seen the 2011 anime. Especially if you're a fan of other old shounen like DB, YYH, OP, Rurouni Kenshin, Naruto, etc.
