People that are surprised that the election is this close haven’t been around Trump supporters much I’m guessing. Trumpers don’t see that he’s done anything wrong. They don’t feel he did anything that contributed to the spread of coronavirus. They don’t care about his tweets.
With social media and news, we can make it so we only read opinions that agree with ours. Which makes it easy to stay stuck in one spot, or even get dragged down deeper. To me, that’s what is scariest. That we have tiny internal worlds curated to fit our preexisting opinions.
This is my concern for everyone (this isn’t just about Trump followers) and for the future of politics in general. Our brains are being fed a never-ending conveyor belt of only things that we agree with. It’s not good for us.
But if you’re thinking “how can these people STILL support Trump after all this” it’s because for 4 years they’ve only been reading pro-Trump perspectives, engaging with online or irl communities that only serve to reinforce their political opinions. To them, nothing has changed.
I’m also guilty of being voluntarily submerged in content that reinforces my own worldview. I’m just saying it’s going to be very hard for us to ever change our opinions, grow our perspectives, or even “come together” when everyone has their own phone telling them they’re right
