Trump's narrow loss marks the beginning of an internal struggle for the soul of conservatism.

The GOP could revert back to its comfortable, elite-driven agenda, or it could embrace the working-class realignment that Trump grasped intuitively.

On this, I'm with @AmerCompass. https://twitter.com/oren_cass/status/1324059979788201986
A working-class realignment will require expanding the coalition to include many more people of color.

But to do that skip the pandering & identity politics and focus on the economics.

After all, Black & brown workers got f'd by deindustrialization too. https://americancompass.org/the-commons/marco-rubio-takes-on-deindustrialization-and-race/
A working-class realignment will require conservatives to not just making peace with entitlement programs like Social Security, but to in many cases defend them from leftists who oppose the reciprocity and race neutrality of old school egalitarianism. https://americancompass.org/the-commons/no-the-new-deal-wasnt-racist/
A working-class realignment requires giving social conservatives a role in setting the policy agenda, above and beyond judicial nominations and nice rhetoric.

That means proactive support for marriage and family, even if it costs some money (the horror!) https://americancompass.org/the-commons/social-conservatism-and-the-small-government-straightjacket/
Working-class realignment means rejecting the free-market fundamentalism of the "small government" / Jeffersonian right, in favor of a conservative Hamiltonian agenda -- a national project to create the pre-conditions for thriving local communities.
