THREAD: I've seen a remarkable amount of self-soothing from Democrats and progressive media on Twitter, with the biggest influencers trying to force liberals to be excited about the election result. When even the media are calling your effort an abject failure, well, it is one.
First, let's talk about the presidential election. We had four years of nonstop negative coverage of Trump, an impeachment, a global pandemic that killed 230K Americans, economic slowdown in past 8 mos., etc., and polls showed a landslide for Biden nationwide and in the states.
That didn't happen. Not even close. At best, Biden will end up with a historically modest Electoral College victory built on razor thin margins in a few swing states. This is... hardly a mandate. And in fact, it's far less of one than even when Trump won in 2016.
If Democrats win WH, it will be with a nominee hardly any were passionate about and who their increasingly leftwing activist class disdains. Even among those who voted for him, Biden certainly doesn't project the strength and stamina the average voter has a lot of confidence in.
And of course, the scandals about the Bidens are not going to go away once he's president. If anything, it's just beginning! If you think the Republicans were going to tolerate four years of nonstop investigation and innuendo about Trump but shrug off Biden, you're a fool.
Now, onto the rest of the cycle, which was an absolute dumpster fire for Democrats. Republicans will hold the Senate, and Mitch McConnell will still be majority leader. Ouch. That's gotta sting! In doing so, they've also thwarted the entire progressive agenda.
I remember during SCOTUS hearings, liberals on here were screeching about packing the courts and EVEN ADDING STATES TO THE UNITED STATES. LOL. There's no Green New Deal. Tax cuts aren't getting repealed. They can't restructure the U.S. government. We'll just have gridlock.
Meanwhile, over on House side, GOP absolutely destroyed the Democratic majority. It's practically non-existent, and at the least, it's too small for Pelosi to do anything with. Republicans elected BINDERS FULL OF WOMEN, minorities, veterans, etc. - a great thing for the party!
And on top of that, 2022 and 2024 are going to be years even more favorable to Republicans electorally. I would be extremely surprised if there wasn't an expanded GOP majority in the Senate and an overwhelming one in the House. Truly. Look at a map!
Oh, and let's not forget about the states. Democrats were absolutely pummeled there, too. They have only a handful of state legislatures going into what is going to be a massive redistricting year. GOP won a ton of executive posts and judgeships too. Really, it was a red wave.
And let's not forget what is perhaps the most important thing to consider: Democrats no longer can assume anything about any voting demographic. Minority voters supported the GOP in unprecedented numbers in 2020. And it's not just because of Trump!
In fact, just as in 2016, the vast majority of Senate candidates actually over-performed Trump in their states. I'm sure Trump helped, but it's hard to say that it was he alone who won these voters. Republicans are getting better, smarter and more committed to outreach.
And, as many in the media pointed out, it is actually white, college-educated, affluent voters who moved from Trump to Biden, even as minority voters moved to Trump. So what kind of party are the Democrats going to be? Will they be able to tell their activists "no?" Ever?
If anything, they're afraid of their activists (and among some of the more, umm, explosive ones, probably for good reason). Are they going to tell teachers' unions to shove it to give underserved communities a shot at school choice? Prooooobably not.
This isn't to say that Republicans shouldn't be upset their guy may not win. For many voters, Trump represented someone fighting for the average person. It was something people did not feel from other GOPers before. And yes, the executive branch can do some crazy stuff.
But, GOP can replicate that fighting spirit (we're already seeing it thanks to McConnell's steadfastness on judges!) voters demand. If anything, the Republican Party has become savvier, stronger and more confident. And that's something that transcends any one politician.
GOP is also talking about "kitchen table" issues people actually care about, while the Democrats simply won't abandon their insistence on eliminating oil, imposing neverending lockdowns, Critical Race Theory and canceling whatever or whomever they target that week.
Again, I'm not trying to belittle anyone's anxieties or frustrations or sadness about Trump (maybe/probably) losing. I'm just trying to tell the truth: it was a bad night for Democrats, and even if they are able to muster a WH win, it will be barely and that will be all they get.
