Good morning. Here is a new thread on misinformation and other garbage we're seeing across the internet, 2 days after Election Day. If yesterday's volume was misinformation around election results, today I am most worried about real-life action stemming from private online spaces
As @donie notes, there is a pro-Trump "Stop The Steal" Facebook group alleging election fraud. This is false, as far as we know. There's no solid proof of widespread voter fraud whatsoever. https://twitter.com/donie/status/1324342920854573056
Yesterday evening a vote counting center in Maricopa County, AZ had to close because of a sizable crowd that had gathered outside. You might've seen this on CNN. It was organized by Pizzagate pusher Mike Cernovich. They shouted "Protect The Vote" https://twitter.com/alexadobrien/status/1324217524809060354?s=21
Back to MI. This post falsely claimed that windows at a Detroit absentee ballot counting center were covered to hide the vote. Not true, according to Jake Rollow, MI Dept of State Comms Director. "Michigan's absentee ballot counting processes are meticulous, fair & transparent."
Former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich tweeted an allegation this AM that the Democrats are stealing the election. Twitter has just applied a label to his post, as there is no evidence of this.
Just seeing that Trump also shared this misinformation. Again, emphatically, this appears to be distorted information. Attaching full official statement from MI Dept of State Comms Director Jake Rollow here.
Big yikes. Lots of calls to action in this Substack, which is being shared heavily by the Stop the Steal FB group.

"Participate in citizen journalism by monitoring and documenting ballot counting"

This has led to the harassment of poll workers in MI & AZ https://mission.substack.com/p/5-real-actions-you-can-take-right
Several states allow extra days for the receipt of ballots postmarked by Election Day, inc PA and NC. (Twitter labeled.)
Just in: Another label on a Trump post, with reach and engagement limited by Twitter. "Plenty of proof - just check out the Media."

There are a lot of lies being pushed as proof. No evidence of widespread voter fraud whatsoever.
No no nono nonono. Just saying this doesn't make it true. No evidence of widespread voter fraud and an article on The Federalist, which has repeatedly published misinformation, does not make it true.

Twitter labeled just now.
Love these corrective statements from the Michigan Dept of State on #sharpiegate and on rumors that dead people can vote. https://twitter.com/MichSoS/status/1324391461014675456?s=20 https://twitter.com/michsos/status/1324366561612845057
Viral claims of dead voters' ballots being counted in Michigan. >119K Twitter interactions and counting. This is false; the Michigan Dept of State debunked this with an official statement: https://twitter.com/MichSoS/status/1324391461014675456
Really worrying effect of misinformation. A falsehood spreads, gains traction in grps w/ track record of violence. Ppl use one trigger word (Sharpies!) based on a lie (county did NOT change pens in 24hrs). This is how real-world events happen from misinfo. https://twitter.com/BrianaWhitney/status/1324164409850167296
Twitter just labeled this tweet from Donald Trump Jr. baselessly claiming that votes for Biden were "created" in Georgia.
Already debunked this one but this volume is at ~80K.

No, votes from dead people aren't being counted. Also the poster, Ryan Fournier, is the chairman of a pro-Trump student group & a known misinformation actor who has been willing to post lies online. https://twitter.com/daveyalba/status/1324411440766291969
Things are getting a lil ridiculous.

As @JaneLytv reports, the total number of people who voted in this election is likely going to end up at just under ~200M. Nowhere are we hearing that there are 589M votes that will be counted! Except Twitter https://twitter.com/janelytv/status/1324438313416204289
This Babylon Bee article is being shared in earnest across Facebook. The Babylon Bee is a right-wing satire site. This is not a real article. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/16/technology/babylon-bee.html
And another one from the @buzzfeednews team which I also heard about when I talked to a source in Detroit. No, this "cart of ballots" pictured is not a poll worker doing something dishonest with ballots. It's TV equipment from a cameraman. https://twitter.com/CraigSilverman/status/1324354126688493568
This was sort of a joke, but the Breitbart article is one of the most popular posts on Facebook right now. ~17K interactions on the post by Team Trump in one hour https://twitter.com/daveyalba/status/1324449435577966592
There are several features in this picture that immediately stand out as suspicious. The image is extremely pixelated, which suggests it was doctored. I would not take this photo at face value, unless you spoke directly to someone who took it.
