I never use LatinX or rarely. Should we consider that when Republicans or older generation folks hear it they either don’t understand it or they assume journalists are Democrats because They are using language they see employed by the left? (More)
I ask b/c the language journalists use do signal things to different groups. LatinX is about inclusion and degendering language but it is off- putting to a big portion of Latinos. Is the responsibility of journalists to expand language and change usage or to reflect preferences?
I feel asking these questions are urgent as we think about how the MSM tries to rebuild trust. This moves beyond facts (which are facts) and more into HOW we present them. Thoughts welcome.
(And I’m using LatinX as an example or something broader. This era has been marked by all sorts of journalistic linguistic things that may need to be discussed)
