I'm watching a session Restoring Joy in Work: Priorisiting Wellbeing and Preventing Burnout during & post-Covid.

Will be posting some reflections ⬇️

Here's the IHI Framework for Joy in Work. The first step is to ask staff "what matters to you?" Great to see this mirrors asking patients what matters to them. It helps us see patients and staff as whole people, more than their illness or their role.

#Quality2020
Joy at work is linked to better outcomes and better patient care! Staff wellbeing isn't fluffy, it's crucial.

Joy & wellbeing cannot happen when:

đź’ĄWork demands not matched to knowledge, abilities
đź’Ą Insufficient support
đź’Ą Little control over work processes
đź’Ą Unsatisfactory work conditions
đź’ĄMoral injury

We're hearing about experiences at @RoyalFreeNHS .

"What matters to you" has been embedded in the way they work, rather than being a once a year event

The Joy in Work collaboration @RoyalFreeNHS

Asking staff what mattered to them & increasing joy in work helped reduce staff turnover in ICU

#Quality2020
To help staff @RoyalFreeNHS based on staff feedback this Meaning and Purpose was created:

đź’™Common goals
đź’™ Great patient need
đź’™ Culture of testing improvement ideas
đź’™ Promote self care, keep saying thank you

#Quality2020
Physical and Psychological safety was another focus:

đź’ˇCommunicate the facts
đź’ˇ Provide different types of support
đź’ˇ Safety as a priority for staff as well as patients

#Quality2020
As a result of focusing on what mattered most to staff, staff felt they had more autonomy and control:

đź’™ Freedom and trust
đź’™ 'Breaking the rules'
đź’™ Flattening of hierarchy
đź’™ Being more imaginative

I love this image.

Before Covid, it was a blank wall along a long corridor. A call went out to the local community for images to fill the wall - this is the result! 🤩

'Project Wingman' was about staff from the airline industry who had been furloughed supporting the hospital. Teamwork and collaboration to support patients and staff within the hospital and beyond!

Staff at @RoyalFreeNHS were asked what had gone well during Covid. This is what they said:

Joy at work is just as important during a pandemic as any other time. Focusing on staff wellbeing and what matters to them makes a big difference to patient care.
