It’s telling, watching right wing commentators try and draw parallels between Trump’s baseless threats of court action and @thatginamiller’s successful challenge in 2016 - when the former is attempting to subvert democracy and the latter was defending it.
Gina’s case was never about Brexit, - as she explains here in Rise - but about the Government’s attempts to force through a decision without putting it to Parliament first. Had they succeeded, it would have changed the system forever, making the Government far less accountable.
For these efforts, she received hundreds of threats of violence, often with strong racist and misogynistic overtones, and sent to both her work and home addresses. But she continued to campaign, even successfully taking the Government to court again in 2019.
Attempts by people like Darren Grimes to compare Gina’s work defending British democratic institutions, fully backed by evidence and the law, to a temper tantrum thrown by an authoritarian upset at not getting his way, is not only offensive but deeply dangerous.
As always, we are hugely proud to publish Gina - and to join her in standing up to assaults on democracy by publishing voices like hers and, perhaps even more vitally, continuing to tweet at length about what terrible dickheads Grimes and his ilk are.
