Been seeing this sheared around with people especially wondering why Am Indian Trump support is high. Well it’s because this is bad data and you shouldn’t make inferences from it (thread)
1. We should assume that a good number of these are Liz Warren types. People who have heard they are native but have zero connection to community and just get off on letting you know they are part Cherokee.
This is a problem every person who surveys Native people has to go to great lengths to address, and that effort was unlikely to have happened here. This is likely geographically concentrated. There were likely not many, if any exit polls on reservations.
3. There are regional differences and certainly no denying that native conservatives exsist. Oklahoma is filled with white passing Christian conservative natives. They could easily be who is driving this as the would be more easily polled in places like Tulsa
Or other places in OK. Likely polling didn’t happen in highly populated native areas the plains or northern MI, WI, MINN, and certain parts of the Southwest. (Though it should be noted there’s a conservative blocs of Natives in the SW too).
4. Fortunately more data is to come on this. Right now though, numbers like this should be treated with deep skepticism and not shared around like they are fact.
