We are once again Annoyed at Terrible Analyses of the Election Results.
Tbf, a lot of the shittest analysis is coming from the UK, where our pundit class consists almost entirely of paid-up Tories and career transphobes.
Listen *beckons you closer* this isn't a particularly "tight" or "close" election. There's no "dispute over results". It's taking several days to call the winner because there are a huge number of mail-in ballots and there is a physical limit to how fast they can be counted.
We're in a pandemic. Things are complicated. You were told they would be.
The idea that Biden has only just squeaked a win is taking hold because you think the delay is like the 2000 election. It's not. They're literally still counting the votes that were cast days or weeks ago.
"Millions of Americans still voted for Trump". Yes, he was running on the Republican party ticket, you see, and they're one of only two big political parties in America.
And, this may come as a surprise to you, but the guy who won an election and has been President for the last four years is actually popular among some segments of American society.
Did you think the entire landscape of American politics would shift overnight? Even if Biden had taken Florida and Texas, that wouldn't have been the case. A "landslide" isn't what you think it is.
The pollsters didn't "get it wrong again" - they said FL and TX *could* go to Biden, and both were competitive races. But it's winner-takes-all when it comes to electoral college votes, so the fact that they *didn't* swing blue doesn't mean that was wrong.
The votes are still being counted. You're trying to do a postmortem for someone who's still sitting up in bed reading.
A tremendous number of UK pundits know exactly fuck all about American politics or electoral systems but they sure as hell have some Opinions they'd like to share about how what's happening supports their preexisting views!
We get it. It's tough to have a deadline and pages to fill when there's no news about a topic. Unfortunately, the fact that it simply takes longer to count postal votes isn't something you can make into a think piece about Jeremy Corbyn or trans people.
"What does the limitation on the speed at which over a million votes in Pennsylvania can be counted tell us about Brexit?"
