THREAD:
This is one of the worst things I have read during this pandemic. https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/9253/pdf/?fbclid=IwAR2cQdnKD-Vuv78ujA9iv0Ydo-RivlDPOdMQ8vrNuyZ3iKsVhcWE9JZ5_eA
There is much to take issue with, but Iâm popping back onto twitter to argue against one specific (& very troubling point) 1/

The second argument given in this paper is that of âThe mental health parity argumentâ
It is argued that âThe justifications for compulsory vaccination map onto the criteria for detention and treatment contained in the Mental Health Act 1983â
This is so wrong that I have 2/

To wonder if it represents wilful misrepresentation of the MHA. Only briefly do the authors touch on the cardinal point of the mental health act-
That it permits detention for treatment of those considered to have a mental disorder. 3/
That it permits detention for treatment of those considered to have a mental disorder. 3/
These provisions are not taken lightly, indeed, in the act there are safeguards in place- the fact that someone has a disorder alone is not sufficient to warrant compulsory treatment.
They must also be considered a danger to themselves or others as a result of their disorder 4/
They must also be considered a danger to themselves or others as a result of their disorder 4/
Two registered medical practitioners must agree both on the existence of this disorder and on the existence of the risk. (An emergency request can be made by a single person, but this is just that- an emergency- and expires after 72 hrs) 5/
As I mentioned, guidance for this act explicitly states that having a âmental disorderâ alone does not justify detainment. And also this incredibly important paragraph: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/435512/MHA_Code_of_Practice.PDF 6/
The fact that the MHA act is being used in this piece of work as a justification to impose compulsory vaccination on a population that has capacity is insidious and disturbing. From a bioethics point of view it is deeply concerning. 7/
This paper misrepresents both the cardinal points and purpose of the MHA but also the safeguards that are in place. There is no equivalence between the terms of the MHA and widespread wholesale compulsory vaccination. 8/
Also worth noting the 5 key guiding principles when implementing the MHA. Theyâre good principles to live by. Sadly absent in so many ways this year
