The thing I’ve noticed about people who continue to cleave to politicians who do them material harm on a daily basis is… they aren’t self-reflective people.

When someone does something that seems irrational, when they support policies that hurt them, when they consistently do things that make their lives worse, it’s because they are getting something out of it that makes it worth it.
Whether it’s Brexiteers or Trump supporters, the sense of worth they get from being part of the club is so intense, and so lacking in their lives otherwise, that they will tolerate (and even deny) staggering amount of damage and pain to keep getting that hit of ego.
In my personal opinion, it has to do with being brought up with a zero-sum game understanding of reality.
How can so many white people, so many men, so many christians… feel so desperately worthless that they embrace Trump?

that any gain of social status for women, for People of Color, for non-straight people is a loss for them.
They cannot conceive of a universe in which someone else’s gain is not their loss.
As societies become more egalitarian, as more groups are recognized as deserving...

of equal rights, and equal opportunities, these people feel that they must be losing their rights, their opportunities in order for someone else to enjoy them.
We need to educate children better. That’s the only way this shit is going to end.

We need to teach our kids that when someone else is recognized, valued, afforded opportunity… it doesn’t mean we get less. In fact, quite the opposite. Your gain is my gain. Your good fortune is my good fortune. Your recognition, your value, your success… makes us all better.
