Born in British India to a Scottish father, her mother born in Darjeeling, of Irish and Indian heritage. She travelled Europe with her parents, schooled in England, France and Italy becoming fluent in French and Italian.

She began acting studies in 1931 but in 1932 she ended studies at RADA, and married Herbert Holman, and in 1933 she had a daughter, Suzanne. In 1935 she returned to acting and met Laurence Olivier, beginning an affair in 1937 and marrying in 1940.

In Britain attractive women are somehow suspect. If there's talent as well, it's overshadows. Beauty and brains can't be entertained; someone has been too extravagant. In America the looks of a woman are considered positive for her gift and doesn't detract from it.
