That's always been the trick. Conformity is enforced at the ground level by parents, teachers, and even friends. The US don't need a specialized Though Police. For any dissenter that gets too loud and too influential ... well, they'll discredit if they can, kill if they can't.
This might sound like a conspiracy theory, but it's actually just basic history. And that's just actual dissenters.

Part of the reason so many conservatives don't like Trump is because he started fucking with the formula, ignoring the subtleties of the craft. They still have all the same actual aims as that guy. Of course, phone cameras didn't do them any favors either.
(Though, I'm still confident that Trump's only true aim is to fill the emptiness in his black hole of a heart with a semblance of pride and pleasure, because his daddy never told him that he loved him, and he just wants to prove to Old Man Trump's ghost that he's a big boy now)!
