Here are my thoughts about the whole diversity and @qldtheatre line up: Aiming for "Diversity" changes nothing and our approach to deconstructing racism in the arts through "inclusion" and "diversity" is completely wrong.
The way that we view "Diversity" in arts is that we focus on cultural minorities who are on the margins being more visible and get them just that bit closer to the centre. We think disguise tokenism as "inclusion" and think that letting "minorities" sit at the table is enough.
The issue is this: we NEVER question the "norm". If diversity is about cultural inclusion then who is doing the including? We should be focusing on White Supremacy & just how invisible it is in upholding our institutions. Diversity doesnt challenge whiteness, it bolsters it.
Instead of saying "Where are our Aboriginal plays?" lets start calling every play that's written or helmed by White people "White plays", lets start making White creatives put their race "White" before their job or their name, the same as the "diverse" rest of us have to.
Maybe then when White theatre companies program White plays by White people, just how much the arts is biased and centres White people will be seen for what it is: White Supremacy.
Instead of saying we want a seat at the table, let them tell us why we have to ask and why they automatically have a seat (it's because its a white table and their White). Anyway, wrote this for the guardian awhile ago about the issue with diversity https://www.theguardian.com/stage/australia-culture-blog/2014/jun/12/is-australian-theatre-racist
