How much energy am I willing to spend on problematising this technically true statement which completely doesn't acknowledge the environment degradation and loss of OA land (that's legally possible because we inherited the colonial attitude to defining land ownership)?
Palm oil has many objectively good qualities. Yes, it's the most efficient vege oil in production vs land use.
The prob is for all our comparatively good practices, the result is still a monocrop that's not native and thus bad to the local ecology and displacement of ppl
Don't talk to me about crop practices. Go look at the current problems both peninsular and Sabah forestry depts have in trying to maintain forest cover for the local ecosystem. Respectively they've compromised with a forest connectivity approach
Do you recall taking highways in Pahang that's inexplicably a land bridge? That's one of the outputs, in order wild animals can travel without being hit by vehicles (compare with news in other locations of tapirs etc dead from car collision)
It's hard to maintain forest cover connectivity when the planned land areas kept having their land use categories redefined to allow 'agriculture use'.

At no point I'm talking about illegal shit. That's what we're good at.
And i haven't even talked about how felda is an extremely effective poverty eradication scheme that's built on settler colonialist paradigms

But that's beyond the brief of this whole thing about palm oil.

M'sia wants to have its own certification because it wants to set its own
terms that's more forgiving than RSPO. we've been very firm about this. Ask yourself why.

Look, it's not necessarily a bad thing because M'sia is a respected intl actor in terms of standards setting (eg syariah banking, tabung haji, finance standards), but examine who our big
interests are in this. Just like we can identify western advocacy on this issue is driven by the soy lobby*.

*Like the EU initial ban on palm oil... It's not palm oil in mass products (which nestle would never agree to), but biofuel. Because p.oil waste is great, plenty + cheap.
