You think this election is bad?

Imagine if Twitter existed during the election of 1824

Back then there was only one party

And four candidates

The Democratic-Republicans

It came down to Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay and William H. Crawford
The 1824 election is notable because it is the only election in history where the candidate with the most electoral college votes did not win.

Andrew Jackson won the most popular vote and the most electoral college votes

But not enough to clinch the election
The election was decided in the House of Representatives

John Quincy Adams won by a single vote

This was because of what was called the corrupt bargain

Henry Clay, who staunchly opposed Andrew Jackson

Dropped out and gave his support to Adams
Trust me. This 2020 election is nothing compared to the election of 1824

I can only imagine what Twitter would be like back then

I’d imagine Andrew Jackson supporters would be screaming about rigged and fraudulent elections

200 years later

Not much has changed
