This is a good question. There are reasons for this, entrenched in white, Southern, or Evangelical culture. Remember, Republicans have been working on white churches for *50 years*. That means at least 2 generations, including mine, grew up hearing that there was a certain https://twitter.com/ClementYChow/status/1324154016754933760
...way that GOD wanted us to vote. Deviating from that is literally deviating from the way God has been presented to you your ENTIRE LIFE, & brings a lot of extra questions with it. "What else were they wrong about? Why did they do this if it WASNT God's will?"
So, it's less that, "White people couldn't convince their relatives," and more, "Evangelical culture has framed their arguments as, 'You might lose family for Jesus,' so they literally don't care."
Not a single Evangelical who believes 3000 children are being MURDERED every day by abortion, will give a rat's-rear-end abt deaths from COVID. The well has been so poisoned, that voting for any pro-choice candidate is viewed as *Joining Satan*.
So, in order to convince white people that Republicans are bad, we HAVE to show that Evangelical culture and thought is fundamentally constructed by liars and grifters.
Because it's TRUE.
I only knew Chuck Colson as an incredible Evangelical author. I had NO IDEA abt his....
...background w/the "Watergate 7" until @GinaPera told me about it! I had no idea how many Evangelical leaders, from pastors, to musicians, to parachurch ministry founders, to every other Evangelical organization I trusted, was actually harboring or covering for child rapists &
....spouse abusers. Literally, at every level, white Christians have been led, taught by, & deceived by, conservative charlatans that they honestly believe are speaking for God. And they serve it w/a side dish of watered-down racism.
I didn't even *recognize* it as racism, because I grew up almost totally surrounded by white people. As I little kid, I realized that the ideology my family was feeding me did *not* match up w/the POC I actually knew. But institutional racism? I'd never even HEARD the term until
....5-6 years ago! Yes, I FIRST heard of it here, on TWITTER. That's how insulated white Evangelical culture is! They will ONLY take in media from approved, "Godly" sources. Everything else is automatically liberal spin. So, we can fight our families, but in the process, we will
...be shunned by them, & our Evangelical friends, & our churches, until we have no roots left. Ask me how I know. The reason is because we OBVIOUSLY (in their mind) left the faith.
The truth is, we're living out our faith. They just don't see it. /end
