This is really interesting to me. The strength of the right in America is largely down to its ability to portray itself as against the ruling class while being, of course, 100% a part of it. Can you imagine a dem talking head saying "the ruling class is disgusting"? I can't. https://twitter.com/petercoffin/status/1324153028925132800
Trump is kind of the concentrated embodiment of this but it's been a part of the Republican playbook for ages. Gesturing to the the working class and the anger people feel in these disenfranchised parts of the country. Doing fuck all for them but at least being nice to them.
What does it say about the democrats and about liberals in the US that just acknowledging these people and these places exist is enough to win this kind of political loyalty with jack shit in actual policy concessions?
So many people work their asses off campaigning for progressive or even just less conservative dem candidates in these states that most liberals turn their noses up at and mock when a crisis hits. Those campaigners are working against their own party as much as the Republicans.
Now the way Carlson is signalling to these people is one divorced of class, it leaves the door open for the worst and most white supremacist ideas in these places to fill in its place. But American liberalism helped leave that door open for Carlson.
Sanders broke Liberal Law and tried to actually speak to these people, he went on reactionary outlets like Fox. And liberals... got mad at him. They don't want to convince these people or try to win them over. If you talk to them it makes you Filthy.
INTERESTINGLY the same liberals who don't even want you to try to engage with often reactionary rural populations are the same who will and have been calling people violent psychopaths for thinking a militant revolution is necessary.
So they don't want to fight these people. They don't want to speak to these people. What do they want? Ignore them and get angry as fascists continue to plant seeds among them? Leave them to become more violently reactionary while believing they're fighting the ruling class?
This is what we mean when we say liberalism enables fascism. It's not just an Epic Own on the libs, it describes a function the liberal approach to the crises of capital serves that we can observe REPEATEDLY throughout history. It never works. Only socialism even begins to fix it
