Had a great conversation w/ my @newmarkjschool Craft class today about what journalists should be doing better in light of what media missed in election coverage. We discussed: (1) no one group is a monolith: a white Cuban might have quite different views than a Black Dominican.
(2) Journalists need to check our biases and do a better job of listening. Too often we make assumptions and go into reporting situations thinking we know the story. We clearly often don’t.
(3) We need more people from certain communities covering those communities. That way we’re less likely to miss things. Newsrooms, from local ones to large national ones, need more diversity, on all levels.
(4) If someone doesn’t care about local elections or a particular issue, the question might not be why they’re so uninformed, but rather what systems have been put in place that have caused them to think/feel this way.
There was more, and on a morning where there was much to be anxious about I was heartened that my students get it. My hope is that they and others of this generation will bring about the changes this industry so desperately needs.
