I have grown increasingly impatient with folks who are unwilling to acknowledge the currents of racism, misogyny, homo and trans phobia and general bigotry that shape who this country is at a foundational level.
We deny this reality more easily than we acknowledge it. “This is not who we are.” (Yes it is) This can’t happen here.” (Yes it can)
Trump, who is simply latest poisoned fruit of our blighted tree got more votes in 2020 than in 2016.

Is it ignorance or hatefulness that attracts these delusional people to him, and does it matter?
Too many of us don’t know how things work & are swayed by propaganda. Too many drink from the fountain of grievance.
But everyone who voted for him was okay with harming others.

Even now people are trying to soft peddle Trump’s divisive white nationalist rhetoric and denying and downplaying his corrosive actions that harmed our neighbors and friends . Watch. It is happening.
The GOP want to open space between Trump & actions/conditions they engineered that birthed him.
People want to hide behind a tax break or broken promises made to black people to give cover to their support. “I’m not racist..”. While voting for white male revanchism embodied.

This is who we are collectively, and sadly, all too often individually. It is who we’ve been and each time we attempt to grow in ways that increase inclusion and promote a more just society we backslide. From grievance and fear. From ignorance. And also from hatefulness.
When I encounter a Trump voter whose grasp of reality is so warped & ignorant that they voted for him “for the economy” is that better than explicit hatred?
I honestly don’t know.

The end result is these folks are at the very best give the the benefit of the doubt okay with other people being harmed to get what they want.
And that’s a really frightening indictment of this country but it is consistent with who we’ve always been. Selfish. Exploitative.
