And maybe electing a catastrophically bad president who enabled that hate didn't start it, but it's certainly one of the reasons we're on the brink right now. Trump brought our ugliness out into the light, and then multiplied it. And now 48% of the country endorsed it.
Honestly, the only nonviolent solution that I can imagine for American unity is to have mass referendums on every bit of corruption that America has had to deal with since its creation. A referendum on slavery, on reparations, on native land, on Trump, on Afghanistan and Iraq,..
... on our role as a world leader, on our military spending, on our electoral system, on statehood, on religious freedom, on civil rights, on policing, on the opioid epidemic, on healthcare, on our prison system, on gun rights, on student debt, on taxes, on the civil war...
... on SCOTUS, and even on the structure of our government. We need a national referendum on fucking everything. A time where we come together each year and together, as a nation, decide who we are and how we should continue.
It won't be perfect, and it'll take years. Absent of that, it's probably only a matter of time, whether months, years, or decades, before Harper's Ferry and John Brown.i
I know this went off on a tangent from Victoria's original point, but if people want to talk about unity, let's be serious about it.
Tbh, the most practical version of this is a multi-year constitutional convention. Like, let's scrap whole portions of the constitution and start from scratch. Fuck this one amendment every generation thing. New Constitution. Then ban all the signers from public office for life.
