When people cast their vote, they are actually voting for a group of people known as electors. These electors, appointed by the states and are pledged to support the presidential candidate the voters have voted for.
Each state’s number of electors is determined based on its population. For example the state of California has 55 electors representing 39.5 million population.
The popular vote determines which candidate wins the entire roster of a state’s electors. If Biden has the popular vote in California, he will get all the 55 electoral votes.
People in every state across the country vote for one president and one vice president.

What Happens if No Candidate Gets 270 Electoral Votes?
In the rare event that no candidate gets the needed 270 electoral votes, the decision would go to the House of Representatives, who would vote to elect the new President from among the top three candidates.

Why this election is important to India ?
On the strategic side of things, it is clear that the relations with US under Trump have grown closer at a more rapid pace than before. India’s China policy may or may not be customised to the US’s response to the country.

While Trump 2.0 may be willing even more to aggressively counter China, Biden is likely to follow a policy of containment with engagement.
The political relationship might be rocky if Biden is to be elected, as the Democrats have been vocal on the issues of Kashmir, CAA, Delhi riots, actions against journalists and NGOS and alleged human rights violations, something the Trump administration has taken care not to do.
