1. Millions of Americans love MAGA more than they love democracy. There should be zero doubt, Trump is just a mirror of America - a populist candidate. This is not new, minorities have called out these issues-we got dismissed & told to look at Obama. We saw the ignorance. We knew
2. that we needed fellow Americans, in their safe spaces, to repudiate any form of discrimination and hate, as soon as it appears, no matter how uncomfortable. It takes BOLD action to dismantle the legacy of colonialism, racism, misogyny, & bigotry.
3. Quick story: In the early stages of the war in Afghan, I was deployed to lead men in combat (all male unit). Every single one of us came home exhausted and bruised, but alive with limbs intact. We arrived to cheers from the citizens we fought for...
4. Every one of my men were greeted with handshakes from all in the airport, on American soil, except me. I was the only minority in my combat unit. I was greeted with middle fingers & hands withdrawn from some. Not all, some. Imagine how I felt in that moment...
5. I was/am willing to sacrifice my life, for every person in this country, and in that moment I felt 'less-than', somehow less American, acutely aware of my skin color. Yet, I served 6 more tours of combat, even after injuries.
6. I did it during the rise of MAGA and deepening racial divides. I was/am still willing to die for people who detest my existence - why? b/c we are ALL Americans. I have one question for the millions of Trump supporters - when will I be completely accepted as American? #Love
7. We can't ignore racism. We just can't. No one wants to believe systemic racism is real. And because people refuse to believe this and examine their own inherent biases, we aren't making the progress we should. We are stuck in place & paint pics of change instead of changing.
Trump legitimized hate, racism, bullying, & misogyny becoming mainstream. The saddest part? some people became numb to it, others were willing to tolerate it, while others leveraged it for ratings. The result? democracy pushed to the brink. Hate destroys, especially if unchecked.
