the 2020 election cost over $10bn. the bulk of that will have gone to media and consultants.
for democrats who lost, that money raised and spent might as well have been set on fire. there's nothing long term to show for any of that.
imagine all of the ways the money could have been spent that would have improved the lives of working class people while simultaneously been more effective and impactful than a world series commercial.
at the end, biden had more money than he knew what to do with. they were looking for ways to throw away money. mcgrath and harrison asked people to stop donating.
that their campaigns didn't have any better ideas than more of the same is a symptom of why they were all shocked and dismayed last night.
also, and even for all of the courting of "moderate republicans," a larger portion of republicans voted for trump in 2020 than 2016.
the democrats need to overhaul their approach not only to campaign strategy and tactics, but also fundamentally change their conception of what a winning coalition looks like.
it is more likely, however, that the party will avoid responsibility by taking for granted that there was no ground to gain because "america is too polarized."
