"Today, our health minister, Cameron Friesen, accused over 200 doctors of ‘causing chaos in the system’ and questioned our motivation.
This has left me doing a lot of thinking tonight...
What does motivate my colleagues and I to spend over 10 years minimum in post-secondary education? What motivates us to work (...) blocks of 24 hour call? What motivates us to regularly put in 60-80 hour work weeks?
What motivates us to often put our own personal lives on hold for endless professional obligations? What motivates us to miss important family events and holidays? What motivates us to return to work early from a maternity leave because the system needs us?
What motivates us to delay retirement because the system needs us? What motivates us to show up to work without contracts for months on end? What motivates us to overhaul our practice to provide virtual care, knowing that we have the lowest virtual care tariffs in the country?
What motivates us to willingly go to work everyday knowing we could become infected with COVID-19 and risk bringing it home to our families? What motivates us to self-isolate from our kids as we await COVID-19 test results?
What motivates us to return to work as soon as we are able after a negative COVID-19 test only to risk getting sick again?
I could go on and on but basically the question is...what motivates me to be a doctor?
What motivates me is knowing that each and every day, I work as hard as I can to contribute to this amazing profession and by doing this, have the potential to leave the field of medicine an even better place than I found it.
That is my motivation and I’m certain that is also the motivation of my 200+ colleagues."

I work with so many incredible people. They care so much about others. I am proud to be a doctor. I am proud to be an advocate.
