America, your racism is showing… A thread. 1/9
I know that Biden may still win but either way, we have very clearly shown who we are. As @nhannahjones stated this morning “Turns out, this really is the country we thought it was.” 2/9
I hoped the election would offer a definitive indictment of the current administration but did not expect it. I was reminded on Fri. just how bad things are when during a talk I was asked not to say“white privilege, unconscious bias, systemic racism” b/c #ExecutiveOrder13950 3/9
Real talk, we need to say those words but more importantly we need to call out white supremacy. I’ve made it my job to use the phrase in nearly every speaking engagement I’ve had since 2016...4/9
I doubled down on it when @NEJM didn’t balk when @katybkoz & @EmedinaEduardo and I wrote:“Structural racism is born of a doctrine of white supremacy created to justify mass oppression for economic and political exploitation.” in our article. 5/9
It is now more clear than ever just how alive and well white supremacy is. Decentering whiteness and dismantling white supremacy can happen, but will it happen? Today I am not hopeful. 6/9
Today our story is not one of republicans vs democrats it’s one of a country founded on and committed to upholding white supremacy. A country that time and time again has shown they are unwilling to examine their racist past. 7/9
So, here we are. For those feeling surprised that we didn't see a blue wave, this is what happens when the power of white supremacy is underestimated. And frankly, until we dismantle it, it really won’t matter who our president is. 8/9
