Aside from the outstanding activist + environmental scientist @NancyMetayer winning her well deserved Coral Springs commission race tonight there are additional municipal wins in Broward County from last night we should be celebrating:
Linda Hill Anderson has been active in her hometown, Hollywood, for decades. She advocated in 2017 to change the confederate street names that are now Hope, Liberty, and Freedom! She will the first ever Black commissioner in the city’s history with her win against an incumbent!
Nick Sortal is a retired Sun Sentinel journalist who is deeply committed to making government more transparent and education equitable in the city of Plantation. You can catch him everywhere taking notes. He was just re-elected to a full term after winning a partial term in 2018!
Jennifer Andreu is an energizing champion of environmental causes and public schools as a longtime education administrator and lifelong Plantation resident. In her first run for office she has won and become the first ever Black Council-member in the city!
Felicia Mychele Brunson is a founder of the city of West Park (circa 2005) and just became their first ever woman Mayor. I first met her when I was in HS where she ran a mentorship program for young women. Her track record in taking care of seniors and children is incomparable.
You may know Tamara James from her time in the WNBA or her foundation that takes care of the residents of her hometown, Dania Beach. In 2016, she made history as the youngest Mayor of the city and was re-elected in a landslide. She is the hardest working public servant + mother!
Harold Fernandez Pryor will be Broward County’s first new State Attorney after 44 years. He’s a good man who he involved in the community and activists. He will enact criminal justice reforms we haven’t seen before in our backyard. His win is another history making one for us!
Joe Scott, a West Point graduate, will be our new Supervisor of Elections! After years of not having the best reputation, the Broward SOE will progress with accessibility, engagement, and technology. Joe will ensure we have efficient elections and protect our votes.
@Robin_Bartleman is District 104’s State Representative-Elect! She served countywide for many years on the Broward School Board where she was notorious for holding the district accountable and being a tireless advocate for teachers + students. She’ll be a needed education expert.
After losing her husband, Coach Chris Hixon, in the tragedy at MSD, Debbi Hixon turned her healing into public service. She’s an amazing 32 year educator + marine science magnet coordinator at South Broward HS. She will be our new Broward School Board at-large Member!
In House District 101 we’ll now be represented by @mariewoodsonfl who is a proud Haitian American, longtime human services administrator with Miami Dade County. She will be assuming the seat that @ShevrinJones is vacating after 8 years as he’s now District 35 State Senator elect!
More to come that I’ll add later!
Please forgive any typos! Also, I realize I’m also adding state races but there so many people that deserve to be recognized who have won and lost this cycle in our county.
